A Shot of Faith (to the Head)Be a Confident Believer in an Age of Cranky Atheists
By Mitch Stokes
This book fills a void in a much needed way. It is practical, and easily readable. Anyabwile walks through the texts that describe the requirements for elders and deacons, and gives help to those in churches who are looking for the next generation of rising leadership. Finally, use the book pedagogically. That is, use it to teach and instruct. Perhaps a church needs to select its first elders after a period of planning and study. I highly recommend this book for young men who are wondering if they are called, those pastors who are struggling with their calling, and pastors and elders who are looking to invest in young men to develop as future pastors and church planters in the context of planting gospel driven churches around the globe.
I was very encouraged by this book. I humbly think this book should be included as part of any training for those pursuing pastoral ministry. Harvey is asking and trying to answer a question that many guys are asking. Well researched, engagingly written, and utterly reasonable, the author provides myriad examples of how this new tolerance has influenced all areas of life. Copious examples of the absurd and maddening new tolerance are given in the religious, educational, political, academic, and news media spheres. There is time spent on the interaction of evangelical Christianity with the culture at large and how the new tolerance seems to be intolerant of a serious Christianity. Many examples are given.
I really enjoyed it, as it is intellectually stimulating without being stuffy or overly academic. It is also written from a Christian perspective without being overtly so. It reads like how his lectures would be: given to a mixed audience of academics and the public, Christians and skeptics. Carson is a gifted writer with deep insight. I'd heartily recommend it to Christians and non-Christians alike.
I got a free copy of this from Booksneeze for my fair and honest review.
